Myths Surrounding NLP and Hypnosis

NLP & Hypnosis

There are many myths surrounding NLP and hypnosis and their applications. Popular entertainers such as Derren Brown (and in the past Paul McKenna) give the impression that by using these “mind tricks” NLP practitioners or hypnotherapists are able to take control of people’s minds without their permission. This is just bumph. Anyone who does not want to be controlled simply won’t be – period.

The next time you watch one of these shows remember that a 30 or 60 minute T.V. show has literally hours of material that is edited out. What the T.V. audiences don’t see is the volunteers where Mr Brown is not able to establish and build rapport and thus not make us all laugh or go wow! After all this would not be very entertaining would it?

Here are some other popular myths or questions that we get asked as we provide our professional services to people who seek to make serious change in their lives and their personal development.

Will I Lose Control While Under Hypnosis Or During An NLP Session?

Absolutely not; you will still feel like you are in control to do whatever you would like to do, but you would choose not to. For instance if the therapist asked you to close you eyes you could also keep them open, either way it would still work for you. NLP and hypnosis is less about mind control and more about helping the client give themselves permission to change.

Our strong belief is that therapists, practitioners and healers don’t make the client change. We provide the right environment to make change happen and when this occurs the client figures the rest out for themselves and their own ability to change takes over. If anything we help identify the obstacles to change we then help the client to remove them.

Will I Do Anything That I Am Told While Under Hypnosis Or During An NLP Session?

Not against your will. Your will and your subconscious mind when working well together are the most powerful tools of change. The practitioner may make some suggestions to you on a conscious level and you can choose whether to implement them or not. When we make hypnotic suggestions we look to bypass the conscious mind because the client has already given us permission to plant he suggestions. Your subconscious mind will then act on those suggestions without the interference of the conscious mind.

Will Lasting And Meaningful Change Only Happen As A Result Of Entering Into A Deep Trance?

No. Profound change can happen when a client enters into a light trance. The key to NLP and hypnosis is that once the practitioner is able to help the client to relax their subconscious mind becomes more sensitive to the suggestions given to it.

Will I Start To Do Embarrassing Things After My Session?

Only if you want to! As explained earlier, it is not possible for anyone to make you do anything that you don’t want to do. When you come to see a professional hypnotherapist such as Birgit (link to Bee) or an NLP Master Practitioner like Mark (link to me), the first thing that we would establish is what changes you would like to make and in what context. We would then seek your permission to make those changes. Very often we find that on one level you may be consciously willing to make those changes but on another you may be resisting it, so sometimes it takes some detective work on our part to help you make any change at all!

Does NLP And Hypnosis Guarantee Results?

No. No therapy can ever claim to cure or heal everyone. Having said that, a skilled practitioner will be able to identify the client’s obstacles to change. Once identified it is the clients desire to want to change that is the most important factor in whether they actually change or not. Ability to change with no desire to change will give the same result as no ability to change with full desire; at least with desire to change you are more likely to seek a solution and improve on your abilities.
