Stress & Anxiety
Stress & anxiety is an illness of the mind that is totally related to the future. People get themselves into anxious states by thinking about what the future holds, especially at this time when the media is having a field day with the hype surrounding the credit crunch.
Stress and anxiety is a thought process and a very destabilising and un-resourceful one. But the good news is that you are in control of your thoughts and how you think; it’s just that in the past you might not have been shown how to do this properly. By following the simple steps below you can begin to retrain your mind and your thinking and work towards a healthier and calmer mind.
A Short Term Solution – Taking Back Control
At New Thought Leader we recommend the following simple steps to help you to overcome stress and anxiety in the short term:
1) Become more aware of the present moment …
When you find yourself thinking anxious thoughts about the future, bring yourself back to the present moment. You are probably aware that of all of those things that you worry about very few of them come to fruition – so why spend the time worrying about them?
2) Breathe …
Take the time to fill your lungs with oxygen. You may have noticed that when you are off doing your anxious thinking that your breathing tends to be shallow and fast. This in turn has an effect on the neuro-chemicals that are pumping around your system. Taking deep breaths allows you achieve a calmer and more present state of mind.
3) Choose your thoughts carefully …
When we help people to manage their stress and anxiety we help them to understand the choices that they are making. Your feelings follow your thoughts so if you are thinking anxious thoughts it is a given, a law of nature in fact (cause and effect), that you will have anxious feelings. If however you choose calm and peaceful thoughts you will invariably feel calm and peaceful feelings. So what do you choose now?
The Long Term Solution – Work On The Behaviours & The Thinking
These simple steps outlined above will help you to overcome those anxious feelings in the short term but you may find that you have developed over time a pattern of thinking anxiously. You may find that you all too easily fall into a spiral of anxious thinking that can be triggered by external events, people or circumstances. This behaviour pattern is something that you may need to work on. Other areas that should be considered are looking at how you deal with other people, how you communicate, how you manage conflict and so on.
At New Thought Leader we are currently creating some video’s that we will be posting onto YouTube to help you break the old patterns of thinking and behaving. Check back here soon (estimated early December 2008) and we should have some links in place to help you further.
